Observation Narrative
Plot location: bluff-like slope on south side of South Anna River, 0.5 miles SE of where it crosses Louisa/Hanover County line.
The plot was positioned on the upper portion of a steep, densely vegetated north-facing bluff along the Willis River (the middle to lower portion was too dangerously steep to be sampled). Soils are extremely acidic and infertile. The vegetation is characterized by an open Quercus alba - Fagus grandifolia overstory with a dense understory of Fagus, other tree saplings, and a nearly continuous shrub cover of Kalmia latifolia. Despite the density of the woody vegetation, a number of low cover herbs managed to find footholds in small areas of sheet-eroded soil or moss.
